My Mountain Boy and I were driving Out the Road late last evening (I can't express how very happy I am to be able to say that........) and were on the way back home. Right around the Shrine of St Theresa we both noticed a small black face sitting in the grass. We both thought at first that it was a dog.
But as we drove by it, we looked at each other and said at the same time "That was a bear!"
We slowed down, turned the truck around and slowly drove back the way we had come, stopping the vehicle along the side of the road so we could watch this little furry creature.
He was sitting in the long grass right by the side of the road, happily eating up a storm.
We watched him for a few minutes, and he stayed right where he was until a car drove by with a noisy muffler and scared him back into the woods.
We drove up to an overlook, waited for a few minutes, then slowly drove back to the place where we had seen our little bear, and sure enough he was back in the same place chomping on grass again.
We took a few more pictures from a distance, all the while watching this little cub, while at the same time also watching for momma, who we assumed was close by and ready to protect baby at any time.
After another few minutes two crotch rockets blasted by and scared our baby back into the woods again.
We did the whole scenario over again - turn around, drive back, turn around at the overlook, him sitting eating in the grass again - until finally he ran into the woods of his own accord.
We drove slowly by the place he had been sitting and watched him for a few minutes as he disappeared into the woods. Seeing him finally standing, and unobstructed by the long grass, he was even smaller than I thought he was at first. Just a few months old.......
He was sitting along the side of the road stuffing grass into him as fast as he could. He disappeared into the woods once, then twice, and walked in the woods apparently alone. We could be wrong, but think he may have been an orphan.
Was this your first bear sighting? Were they waiting for Mountain Boy to get there? Glad you're back together and had a safe trip. Thanks for getting up the blog. I love reading it.
ReplyDeleteYes, first bear sighting! Went to Fish and Game today, and turns out he's about a year old. Happily he's not a baby orphan. Very cool!

I wanna know about that Farmall...is it Gary's..???
The Farmall belongs to Garys' father-in-law. It belonged to his father-in-laws' father before that. Something like 1946 or so.
