Something I have never been very good at doing is social networking. My nature is reserved, my tolerance for people is limited, and my time both alone and together with my Mountain Boy is precious to me.
We were invited to a bar-b-que at a colleagues' house tonight though, and we spent a few hours meeting with and networking with a bunch of very nice people from the community.
The colleagues' house is located in an older section of town up in the back hills of Juneau.
The houses are from the early part of the 20th century and have beautiful architectural details common for that era. The streets are narrow, which makes parking extremely challenging. Many houses can only be accessed by walking up lengthy staircases. There are beautiful views of the mountains immediately behind them, and in many cases beautiful views of the channel and town in front.
We talked initially about taking my truck, but once I googled the address and realized exactly where the house was located, taking a Chevy Silverado seemed like a really bad idea. We ended up squeezing my car precariously between two other cars on a downhill on a very narrow street...........
We had a very nice time meeting some very interesting and very accomplished people.
After a couple of hours we decided that it was time to leave, and took these few pictures before heading back out of town...........
As we got closer to the Valley we (on the spur of the moment and in the pouring rain) decided that we would stop at the glacier. It was late enough, cold enough and wet enough to think there was a good chance that we would be out there alone. We were right, and that was good......
The entire area was covered in a thick, and increasingy amount of fog, which gave the place a very different, eery and quietly beautiful appearance.
It was cold, very wet, and the constantly changing fog banks meant that the mountains around us kept constantly changing in appearance, even during our short visit late in the evening to Mendenhall Glacier.
We were very glad to be there, and greatly enjoyed our visit.
There were many many small icebergs in the lake, and where these pieces had broken off the glacier was bright blue in appearance.
My favorite picture from last night..........
