On the left side of Glacier Highway, just before you get to the Valley coming from Auke Bay is this really lovely abandoned and forgotten little wooden shack.
I pass it twice a day on the way to and from work, have passed by it hundreds of times in total since arriving in Juneau, and have always wanted to take a few minutes to stop and photograph it.
Today I stopped and photographed it.
I was in the Valley this afternoon for two meetings, and unexpectedly I found that I had half an hour between the two.
I pulled into some kind of construction site dirt parking lot on a side road, ran across Glacier Highway and took these pictures.
The one above is a zoomed in picture of the shack.
The picture below is what my eyes were seeing in real time. The small building is to the right center of the picture...........
After running in the rain back to my car, I drove for just a minute and pulled into the paved parking lot of a very beautiful park.
This place is very popular during the summer with tourists, and it is very common to see three or four tour buses at a time parked in the lot and people standing in the lot admiring the view and taking pictures.
This park contains paved and dirt trails, a very beautiful view of the mountains and Mendenhall Glacier, and meadows that are absolutely filled with wildflowers during the summer.
I have walked and jogged at this park over these past almost-nine-months, and taken many pictures of the mountains and trails and the Mendenhall River that runs alongside of it.
Now that the wildflowers are done for the year, the meadow is filled with the dried and drying remains of beautiful flowers.
It is very very beautiful in the summer. It is very very beautiful in a very different way now that fall has arrived.........
Brotherhood Bridge spans Mendenhall River and is part of Glacier Highway.
Today I took pictures of the bridge, and both sides of the river...........
One of a handful of native Alaskan motifs located on the rails of the bridge.........
A view from the opposite side of the street.........
A view of the bridge heading towards the Valley.
It is hard to believe that the beautiful mountain and meadow views are located only about two minutes from stores, banks, post offices and restaurants in the Valley.
Safeway Grocery store is located right behind the yellow trees on the left side of the street.
It is always difficult to believe that back-country and civilization are so close to each other in this town.
When LC and I walked on Perserverance Trail this past weekend we entered the trail only five minutes from the back end of the city.............
Back at the park and just a few minutes along the trail..........
And one more view of my little abandoned cabin............
