Lt Shane Childers

This morning LC and I, and many hundreds of others (parents, other family, friends, representatives from the United States Marine Corps and city managers and state legislators, representatives from the Cowboy Chapter Special Forces Association, veterans, members of the public and others) attended a dedication and unveiling of the Shane Childers Memorial at the war memorial park in Cody.............

From the program handed out by youngsters dressed in small Marine uniforms:

This monument erected in honor of First Lieutenant Therrel Shane Childers of Powell, Wyoming who was the first American to die in combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
He was a member of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division and was killed while leading his unit in combat operations on the first day of that war, March 21, 2003.
The street in front of this monument has been renamed in his honor as Lt Childers Street
