It rained hard and blew hard all night last night.
This morning we woke up to very mild temperatures, less wind and lots of rain.
It was a nasty day weather wise, but we decided to go for a drive Out the Road anyway because we both needed to be outside.
There is still a lot of snow further Out the Road, which tells me how much more it snowed out there than it did closer to the house earlier this past week.
As we were driving I could not help but wonder just how much snow would have fallen if temperatures had been just a few degrees lower these past few days than they actually were.
LC pulled the truck over to the side of the road for a few moments while I took this picture of a gushing waterfall coming down from the mountains...........
We had planned to go to Eagle Beach, but when we arrived at the second entrance - the entrance that leads immediately to the beach and open channel, and that overlooks the Boy Scout Trail, it was blocked off.
Both of us were surprised because it has not been blocked off before, and as we turned the truck around to drive back down to the other entrance to the beach we took these pictures.
All along Glacier Highway on the way out we saw signs that this typically already water-logged town was reaching its capacity.
Lots and lots of snow earlier in the week and non-stop heavy rain for the remainder of the week meant that creeks and rivers were all very high, and fields along the way were now ponds.
The river and channel were both high, and the beach and fields at Eagle Beach were all flooded.........
After pulling into the main entrance to Eagle Beach it was quickly obvious that Eagle Beach was not going to work.
The ranger station close to the highway was surrounded by heavy snow..........
And the parking lot, largely unploughed, was filled with a combination of deep snow and ice.
One more skating rink of a lot...........
As we turned the truck around yet one more time, and as Jamie barked and howled loudly in anticipation of getting to go for a walk sometime soon, we decided on a new plan.
We headed back along Glacier Highway with plans to take a short walk on Hebert Glacier Trail..........
Rain, snow and ice as seen from the parking lot at the trail head..........
My camper cover fitting snugly on LC's truck...........
Jamie ready to GO in heavy snow at the entrance to Hebert Glacier...........
We finally had it right.
It was raining but not cold.
It was windy but we were walking on a sheltered trail.
There was a lot of snow on both sides of the trail, but many feet had travelled the trail before us so the walking was challenging but not difficult.
We were alone, and outside, and we were in a quiet place both physically and mentally.
It was all good...........
My Mountain Boy and my Point Dog standing in knee deep snow..........
We did not plan on walking far.
Our goal was simply to be outside for a short while on a nasty day, and walk to the rusty 1920s or 1930's car that I found so unexpectedly on the side of the trail during my first exploration to this place alone in the spring last year.
As we approached the old vehicle that I love so much and which I find so incredibly interesting LC said "there's another one!"
I looked in the direction he was pointing on the opposite side of the trail and was surprised to indeed see another old vehicle.
It was buried further in the woods maybe 50 feet off the trail.
I have been on this trail maybe 10 times over the past year. Maybe more than 10 times. And have never seen this vehicle before today.
During the spring, summer and fall this trail is filled on both sides with dense ferns and thorny devils club, making it next to impossible to either see very far or explore very far off the trail.
With devils club now nothing more than thorny brown stalks and everything else completely covered in snow, this new vehicle suddenly showed itself to us.
I smiled and then laughed happily feeling as though we had found gold.
All three of us instantly veered off the trail and plunged into deep snow as we worked our way towards the vehicle, that we both decided must have been some kind of delivery truck in its former life.
Jamie struggled to keep up with us. LC and I sunk deeply into the snow with each step, but Jamie literally fell into snow holes with each step.
My sweet girl troopered on, undeterred by the snow and wanting to keep up with momma and daddy.
Such a way-cool and unexpected find, and we resolved to explore it again when the snow has melted and before everything begins to grow into a new and virtually impenetrable wall of green again in the spring............
The beautiful, wide open and snow filled Hebert Glacier Trail............
A brief stop to take pictures of our snow covered and bullet ridden old car before heading back.
Whenever I see this car laying on the side of the trail I go back in time in my mind to the era of this vehicle, and again wonder how it eventually found its way to this place.
It (and now also the delivery truck) are such unexpected and random finds............
After loading back into the truck I again asked LC to stop along the side of the road on the way home so I could take pictures of the high, and sometimes fast moving, rivers and creeks............
There were many homes located close to swollen creeks and rivers.
We need time to dry out.
The sun needs to come out for a while.
For many reasons the sun needs to come out for a while.............
By this time in our wet walk and drive and time outside, my camera was finally becoming a bit water-logged.
Tell-tale foggy spots in the pictures told me it was time to stop with the photographs and give my camera time to dry out...........
